WU Elements of An Effective Scholarly Article Summary Discussion
Question Description
I’m working on a research & summaries question and need guidance to help me learn.
The first article summary from week two readings was on Smit and Tremethick (2017). The summary begins by stating the study method used in the research. It then states what the research was about, after which the summary proceeds to shorten the procedure used to conduct the study, and lastly, it articulates the findings. Similarly, in the second article summary on Steven (2014), the author begins by stating the article’s main idea. The summary then proceeds to explain the main point, after which it articulates a sample experiment conducted to test this central idea and its findings. Thus, these two summaries show that one element of a perfect article summary is the main idea of the original article. That is because it is present in both summaries. The next element in these two summaries is supporting information and findings. That is because both articles support the main idea with evidence from the main article and finalize by stating the findings.
There are hence, two methods of practical scholarly article summary. These are either descriptive or evaluative article summary methods. A descriptive article summary is usually routed on facts from the main article. Here, the author’s opinions are not highlighted. For example, the first summary can be described as a descriptive summary. That is because it is based on facts. The summary states the research design used during the study, the sample size, the study’s procedure, and the findings. All these are facts from the main article. Hence, it qualifies as a descriptive summary. The following is an evaluative article summary. This is an article summary method that is mostly opinion based. The summary is written by choosing the topic, writing the thesis statement, determining criteria for evaluating the product, and including supporting evidence. This method can be seen in the second summary, which contains the author’s opinions.Focus on the distinguishing features of political society (the polis).
