WU Communication Techniques with Patient and Health Related Risks Discussion
Description
Respond to at least two of your colleagues on 2 different days who selected a different patient than you, using one or more of the following approaches:
- Share additional interview and communication techniques that could be effective with your colleagueàselected patient.
- Suggest additional health-related risks that might be considered.
- Validate an idea with your own experience and additional research
- Colleague’s post: Scenario: Patient #3: 19-year-old black male athlete on scholarship with muscle pain
- It is important to develop a professional but genuine and trusting patient and provider relationship. Listen to the patientàconcerns while optimizing your skills to develop a treatment plan. For my 19-year-old patient, I would begin the interview by greeting the patient and making the patient feel comfortable and welcome. It is important to have him feel that his privacy is being respected and that he can talk to me in confidentiality, if there is a parent or any other person present in the room, I would kindly ask that person to please step out before I ask the patient any personal questions. I would then proceed with open-ended questions such as, /w are you feeling today?!nd èat would you like us to go over during this visit? his will initiate the conversation with the patient and allow the patient to express any concerns or explain what symptoms he is experiencing. Open-ended conversations about home, school, jobs, activities, and friends can suggest the areas that may trouble the adolescent (e.g., sex, drugs, bullying, suicidal ideation) (Ball et al., 2019). During the interview I would provide appropriate eye contact while listening to the patient, being careful not to interrupt. I would also assess the patientàhistory and conduct a physical exam to help with providing the appropriate care and identify any underlying problems.
- Risk assessment instrument:
- A risk assessment tool would be a great instrument to identify any safety concerns that may impact this patent, this can help to plan interventions to address some of these concerns. For this patient, I would use the HEEADSSS (home environment, education/ employment, eating, activities (peer-related)/ affect/ ambitions/ anger, drugs, sexuality, suicide/depression, safety from injury and violence) risk assessment tool. Using the HEEADSSS review of systems is an effective way to engage in dialogue with teens and address many of the challenges faced by this age group (Smith & McGuinness, 2017).
- Targeted questions:
- According to Ball et al. (2019), some helpful questions for this age group are:
-
- /w are things at home? Tell me about your living situation.
- /w is school? What is it about school that appeals to you? What is it about school that doesn appeal to you?/li>
- %ll me about your friends. What do you do with them? To what groups do you belong? How would a friend describe you?/li>
- èat are you good at doing?/li>
Other questions I would ask:
- èen do you notice your symptoms start to begin throughout the day?/li>
- èere is your pain located?/li>
- /w does this pain affect your day-to-day life?/li>
- èat is your pain level usually? What is a comfortable pain level for you? What makes the pain worse or what makes it better?/li>
