Opposing Views on Genetic Modification
Despite the arguments that genetic modifications will positively impact human or
animal health, many people oppose the practice. Over the past twenty years, there has been
fierce public hostility toward genetic modification. A considerable percentage argues that
genetic modification harms the environment and human health. Many say that GMOs
contribute to the development of cancer and infertility and pollute the environment. Several
studies on this topic support the view that genetic modification negatively impacts human
health and the environment. For instance, Zhang et al. (2016) report that genetically modified
foods are associated with toxic chemicals, allergy, and genetic hazards, contributing to health
risks. According to the article, several people who ate “Starlink” maize which was genetically
modified maize, complained of allergic reactions. This is one of the reasons why people are
opposed to genetic modification. Another study by Cui & Shoemaker (2018) also proved that
a good percentage of Chinese consumers also oppose the use of genetically modified food. The
article reports that organic farmers, environment experts, and NGOs in China continue to
question genetically modified food’s safety and call for a ban on GM foods in the country.
According to Hingston and Noseworthy (2018), the moral stance that genetic manipulation is
unethical is the reason why individuals oppose GM foods. These previous studies show that
many people oppose technology because of the health risks associated with GM foods. Others
oppose genetic change on moral grounds by maintaining that the practice places humans and
the environment at risk.
