Good afternoon Class,
At a young age, we are taught ethics such as being honest, responsible, and to stand up for what we believe in. Organizations do the same thing to ensure that their decisions create a positive working environment daily. Organizations create missions, visions, and values that they follow and expect all their employees to abide by. Organizations create mission and vision statements to define the purpose and goals they wish to accomplish. These statements can allow the organizations to develop strategies that can be helpful to achieving their goals. Dumitrascu and Feleaga (2019) indicated that organizations must find ways to be accountable due to the many contradictions that may exist. Many changes may exist which can change the way organizations work and try to maintain competition, therefore, having these values in place will assist with strategizing while prioritizing their ethical values and ensuring that they maintain their reputation. Dumitrascu and Feleaga (2019) further indicated that the lack of values can affect the organization which can lead to catastrophic issues with internal and external relationships.

- With the mission to entertain the world, Netflix, Inc. (n.d.), aimed to use streaming services to provide entertainment on a global scale. A mission statement is used by companies to express purpose and the delivery intention to consumers (Jeon & Cho, 2021). A mission statement should allow consumers the ability to understand what the company offers and what industry the company is a part of. The Netflix mission statement is simple and does express the company intention and the industry. Netflix is part of the entertainment industry and plans to offer those services worldwide (Netflix, Inc., n.d.). Although, the mission statement is vague because entertainment is a broad category. The entertainment segment does include offerings by Netflix like, movies, and TV shows, but the segment also includes news, magazines, and books, (Carnegie Mellon University, n.d.), none of which are offered by Netflix. There is opportunity to refine the company mission and provide a clearer company message. In alignment with the mission statement, Netflix vision statement describes the companyænbsp;goal. A vision statement is used by companies to express what the company hopes to become (Jeon & Cho, 2021). The vision of Netflix indicates both short-term and long-term goals.
- Core values are intended to express a set of beliefs on how a company will operate (Jeon & Cho, 2021). For example, typical company core values include, integrity, trust, discipline, and pride, just to name a few. Therefore, if integrity is a core value, then all professional activities will be conducted with integrity. This expression should convey to others that interactions or dealings can be trusted because of honesty and high moral principles. The core values of Netflix include integrity, excellence, respect, inclusion, and collaboration (Netflix, Inc., n.d.), all of which are important aspects to any successful business. These core values indicate the intention of operating ethically.
- Netflix has been under scrutiny in the past for what has been deemed as unethical business practices. The US Attorneyænbsp;Office (2021) reported that the former Netflix VP of IT Operations Michael Kail, was found guilty of accepting bribes and kickbacks. Kail was charged with fraud and money laundering (US Attorneyænbsp;Office, 2021). While the core values of the company clearly express honest and good intentions, company personnel have had challenges abiding to the values, as evident by the charges. Banaji et al. (2013) proposed that uncertainty and the lack of a risk tolerance assessment can lead to unethical decisions. People can easily make a decision-based on biases, either conscious or unconscious. Uncertainty is a normal part of the decision-making process but should be reviewed and evaluated to determine the level of uncertainty or risk a person or organization is willing to take. Ethics comes into play when a decision has a negative impact on oneself or others. People will always have to make decisions that involve risk and uncertainty at some level but not all decisions will question oneænbsp;ethics. To avoid making unethical decisions, gather data, avoid stereotypes, and try to consider a problem from a standpoint of having no knowledge of it. Becoming mindful of the biases already in place can help people make the right decisions (Banaji et al., 2013).
