My organization can be viewed as having a strong, tight, and consistent culture through the lens of cultural theories because it strives to create positive school environments that promote learning and success for all students. There are clear behavioral expectations and norms based on an accepted system of core values, which also include high academic achievement expectations and a focus on character development. Cultural differences exist within the ABC charter network’s various units, such as differences in approaches to teaching styles and school leadership, but these differences are typically minor in comparison to the organization’s overarching culture. Although our schools are located in different regions, the culture has been designed to be consistent and replicable, so there is a strong sense of unity across the network. This was eye-opening for me because consistency and replicability are frequently duplicated at a low level, which can lead to conflict within departments with new employees struggling to adapt to the network’s high-stakes culture of excellence.
The ABC charter school network uses a process that takes into account the cultural backgrounds of its stakeholders, including its staff, students, and communities, to develop consensus on mission, tasks, and goals. It is usually started with the Board of Directors and then passed down to state-level personnel, regional leaders, school leaders, teachers, students, and finally families. The process is typically carried out in stages, allowing all stakeholders to contribute their perspectives and opinions.
The cultural lens theory improved my understanding of the ABC charter school network by emphasizing the importance of considering stakeholders’ cultural backgrounds when developing consensus on mission, tasks, and goals. It implies that my organization should continue to recognize the diversity of its stakeholders and strive to foster a sense of shared understanding and purpose that transcends cultural differences for both new and experienced network members. Lastly, This understanding highlights the critical role that culture plays in shaping the educational experience for students at ABC charter schools, as well as the importance of a strong and consistent culture for academic success.
