LITERARY ANALYSIS
(e difficulty of literature is not to write, but to write what you mean.? R. L. Stevenson
The Assignment:
A literary analysis essay, sometimes called literary criticism, closely examines aspects of a literary work. It
does NOT merely summarize the work; rather, it focuses on analysis and interpretation of the work via
close inspection of a literary component. Therefore, in this type of essay, you take a position on some
aspect of the work and support your position with evidence from the text. In other words, you assume the
role of an expert on that work of literature, achieved through close readings, and in much the same way
that an analyst argues for his or her judgment, you will support your claims about the text.
Important Note:
For this assignment, you will connect at least one, but not more than three, elements of fiction (e.g.,
plot, setting, character, narration, symbolism, point of view, or figurative language) to the theme of the
selected short work.
You may choose any work of literature from any of the assigned readings we, be covering in Block I (see
list on Blackboard).
Important Things to Look for/Questions to Consider:
Go through those helpful grey shaded boxes in your text. Identify the key theme (or theme) of your
chosen piece. Identify the various literary elements in your chosen piece. How do those elements
connect to the theme(s)? What moments in the work demonstrate those literary elements?
Important Characteristics of a Literary Analysis:
The work and its author are clearly identified. There is a clear connection made between the literary
elements and the theme(s) of the piece. Evidence is included from the work to support the main points.
Analysis has a serious tone. Analysis is written in the present tense. Analysis has a clearly organized flow.
Analysis has a clear, strong thesis statement.
