University of Minnesota Schwarzschild Radius and Tidal Force Questions
Description
Unformatted Attachment Preview
Due with your lab report for Lab 11: Observing the Cosmological Redshift which is
due by the start of the following lab on Monday December 12.
For each problem, include a couple of sentences to briefly describe what you are doing,
even if your answer is mathematical. This will help us understand your work and
allocate partial credit.
You can use a calculator, but please show your work.
1. Schwarzschild Radius:
What is the Schwarzschild radius of the following objects?
a) the sun
b) the moon
c) 5 solar mass black hole
d) 5 solar mass main sequence star
e) 100kg person
2. Tidal Force: Proportionality Problem
Compare the tidal force in the following situations to the size of the tidal force at the
event horizon of a 1 solar mass black hole, Ft (this is a proportionality problem, your
answers should be of the form: 3 Ft, 0.5 Ft, etc):
a) at a distance of 2 Schwarzschild radii from the singularity of the same black hole
b) at the event horizon of a 5 solar mass black hole
c) at a distance of 5 Schwarzschild radii from the singularity of a 5 solar mass black
hole
Some numbers: while solving the above problems you can approximate the
masses of the Moon and Sun as 7 x 1022 kg and 2 x 1030 kg, respectively.
