Write a position paper, 5-7 pages (1000-1500 words) in length in which
you compare and contrast the views of two of the religions that
originated in India: Jain, Buddhist, Hindu, or Sikh. In this assignment, you
should debate between two alternative perspectives on life, as promoted
by the two religions.
Some possible approaches you can take include the following:
1. A debate between two specific historical or mythical
representatives of the traditions on a subject of mutual interest to
them. For instance, you could create a debate between the Hindu
god Krishna and the Buddha on the topic of karma, dharma or the
caste system.
2. An application of the two contrasting views to a social,
philosophical, ethical, psychological, or other type of “problem” or
“situation” in the world. For instance, you could apply the Jain
concept of ahimsa and the Sikh concept of just war to the current
situation with ISIS.
3. A comparative paper in which you compare and contrast a
philosophical view from western philosophy with the philosophical
views of two religions of India. For instance, you could compare the
Western philosophical notion of eudaimonia to the concept of
dharma in Hinduism and the concept of dependent origination in
Buddhism.
