Summary:
The first sentence of a summary needs to include ALL of the following:
The name of any and all authors and what makes them credible on the topic. You cannot say that they wrote for the publication your are reading, that is circular reasoning. If there is no author, leave it out.
The title of the publication. It is in quotes if it is an article title and italics if you have a publication title (website, book, etc.).
The genre of the text: argue, persuade, inform, reflect, compare, educate. It will NEVER be: discuss, says, notes, etc.
The purpose of the text.
The best format is typically: In the article titled·ritten by§enre word & purpose. (argues that|/p>
A summary is only one paragraph and it contains only material from the text. It should be very specific and it should include the most significant information: quotes, people, dates, facts, statistics, etc. Think of it as anything you would need if you were studying for a test and this was all you could use.
- Analysis
- A summary tells us èat9ou see and an analysis tells us /w4hose choices impacted the text. Use the provided prompts to help you do that in one paragraph only.
- Identify specific word choices/style/tone.
- Were they the appropriate choices for the text and were they effective?
Why or why not?
- Was the introduction and/or title engaging and does it introduce the point?
What characteristics or techniques did the author use that made them effective or what is lacking that could have been included?
What types of research or sources did the author choose to include in the text?
Were those choices appropriate and effective? Why?
Is there enough information or research to support the point? Is there too much?
Is there a heavy bias present in the text?
Where do you see it, and does it impact the text in a meaningful way?
Response
A response asks you to engage with the text in a personal way in one paragraph only.
- How did you react to the reading and why?
Do you think you are the ideal audience? How did you come to that conclusion?
- What are other ideas that this makes you think of and that could be interesting to explore?
- How did you come to your conclusions about the position or topic in the paper? Do you have a personal connection? Have you read more about it?
