ENGR& 214 Fall 2021: Statics project

Purpose
The purpose of this project is to give the student experience with design and execution of an
experiment related to statics analysis.
Learning objectives
Completion of the statics project will allow students to
? Design and perform an experiment
? Collect, visualize, and interpret data
? Compare data to the theoretical framework from the class
? Write a short report explaining the experiment and analysis performed
Experiment requirements
Choose a physical system that allows you to take several measurements of force with at least
one independent variable and one dependent variable. (Hint: an easy way to measure force is
with a bathroom scale.) An example of such a system would be a weight on a beam such that
reaction measurements can be acquired for several different configurations.
Report Requirements

Write a technical report that includes the following sections. (Keep in mind that all
professors have published several research papers and will have high writing
expectations)
? Introduction:
? Include a title header or a title page (ie cover sheet)
? Describe your project (take at least one photo. Photos should be
captioned and referenced.)
? Methods: How you did the experiment.
? Provide a step-by-step description of your experiment.
? Also, describe in detail how your measurements were taken (photos help
a ton here)
? Consider including a data table (in the appendix if the table is large)
? Results and discussion:

Plot the data and talk about it (preferably with the canonical theory plotted
on the same domain)
? Describe any anomalies in the data and propose an explanation
? Compare your results with the theory we learned in class. Highlight the
similarities and differences.
Conclusion:
? What was learned
? What you would do differently in the future
Grammar will represent 15% of the score, so you should take it seriously
