Is the role of community in the R?m?yan?a, as Tagore represented it in the essay we read a few weeks ago, similar to the relationship Ad?n?s describes?
2. Do you think the kind of poetry Ad?n?s describes could be called “lyric”? How does Adorno’s theory of the relationship of lyric poetry to society compare with Ad?n?s’s theory of the relationship of poet to community?
3. Based on Ad?n?s’s discussion, does pre-Islamic Arabic poetry echo or contradict V?lm?ki’s connection of poetry to emotion? How about V?lm?ki’s understanding of the relationship of poetry to history?
4. Turning to Kareem James Abu-Zeid’s translation of “Night,” a short excerpt from a famous ode by the pre-Islamic poet Imru? al-Qays, do you think Ad?n?s’s theory of pre-Islamic Arabic poetry holds? How does Imru? al-Qays blend personal emotion with the record of the tribe?
