Interview and Tour Assignment Instructions
OVERVIEW
Students will be exposed to a degreed social worker and tour a local social service agency for
this assignment. Students are encouraged to ask additional questions and document the
experience. This exposure to the field is vital for new social workers and will aid the student in
identifying a field experience later in the program.
INSTRUCTIONS
Students are expected to identify a degreed Social Worker and complete one in-depth, in-person
interview addressing the questions provided as well as demonstrating appropriate follow-up lines
of questioning. Students should also complete a tour of the agency the Social Worker is affiliated
with, noting important information about the agency and services provided. Students should
submit a 3-page interview information paper using the questions provided below.
If a student is unable to complete an in-person interview and tour, the student may request
permission from their instructor to complete two in-depth phone interviews with additional
written course requirements. An in-person interview is the preferred method of completion for
this assignment.
Students must include the following twelve questions in their interview as well as craft at least
three open-ended follow up questions of your own:
1. What are your specific roles (e.g. counselor, case manager, broker, etc.) and
responsibilities?
2. Could you share about the population that you serve and some common needs of the
population?
3. What does your work schedule look like in a week?
4. What types of other professionals do you collaborate with to help the clients you serve?
How do you collaborate with them?
5. Explain your agency helping process with clients in terms of engagement, assessment,
intervention, & evaluation?
6. Can you share how you keep appropriate boundaries between your professional and
personal life?
7. What is your self-care plan?
8. How have recent world events affected your practice of social work?
9. How do you incorporate practice informed research & theory into your work and stay
current with the social work literature?
10. What is the value of interprofessional collaboration (i.e. with doctors, teachers, shelters,
etc.)?

11. What examples of oppression and discrimination do you experience?
12. Is there anything else you think is helpful for students to know who are interested in this
