Why do you think fire flows for manual firefighting may be different than fire flows to
support sprinkler systems. With this information, do you think planning for water supplies in
industrial areas with a limited budget should focus on building a better fire department or
supporting sprinkler systems?
Your response:
80-140 words. You should use a reference.
Example from another student:
Fire flows for manual firefighting are different than support for sprinkler systems because of
the type of flows that are calculated and how. Firefighters must figure friction and flows
through hoses rather than pipes. Hoses have much higher coefficients and turbulence than
pipes, so therefore they must be figured higher.
As far as supporting sprinkler systems versus manual firefighting, this is a hard question to
answer. I am currently a fire marshal, but still run fire calls with he firefighters. I see both sides
and one does not easily substitute the other. Sprinkler systems are great for early detection and
containment, but there is no trade off for the manual firefighting that must come and
completely suppress the fire in many cases. Without the sprinklers, you would have a much
more involved building and product for the firefighters, which makes it much more difficult for
them. Without the firefighters, sprinkler systems would contain the fire but often do not fully
extinguish it.
