For this account you will read first person accounts of the Mexica, written by a Spanish conquistador and a Spanish friar respectively.  Please note that these authors are writing from a perspective where they believe Spanish culture/religion, etc. is superior to that of the Mexica. 

Bernal Diaz de Castillo was a soldier in Hernan Cortes’ army that took control of the Mexica’s capital city, Tenochtitlan.  At the end of his life, Diaz de Castillo wrote a memoir about his experiences as a soldier.

Step 2: Answer the following questions (1-2 sentences each) 

1. What does Montezuma promise to give Cortes’ if he does not attack Tenochtitlan?

3. When Cortes first meets Montezuma, how does the Mexica king arrive?  What is he wearing? 

Diego Duran came from Spain to Mexico at an early age.  He trained to be a Dominican friar and as a result of his interactions with indigenous Mexica people, he wrote a book called The History of the Indies of New Spain(1581 CE).
