San Diego State University Elements of Strong Personal Writing Essay

Each week/module, we will respond to the prompt in 250-words or more. We will use this activity for peer review and discussion with a few of our class mates. This process has two steps (1. Post 2. Respond). 1. You post your work before 11:30 pm Thursday evening. Your groupmates will do the same. Then you write a thoughtful, 100-word or more response to each of your group mates’ posts. You are welcome to strike up a conversation. We are here to help each other improve our writing. Suggestions and information are key. In that vein, compliments and vague statements will not count toward the 100-word response limit, as compliments alone will not help a group mate improve a piece of writing. Each Discussion assignment is worth 10 points total. Partial points may be awarded to partial efforts. Students must respond to their group mates to receive any points. And because this is a conversation that happens in time and place the due dates will be monitored and enforced.
Prompt: In the previous module, you posted 500 words of draft introductory material for your Personal Writing Assignment. We’ve been moving on since then, creating compelling dialogue, action, and scenes with sensory detail. Now it is time for you to post your next 500 words. This could be a segment in your segmented essay. It could be a complete scene. You may use work that you submitted for your journal entries, but nothing you submitted for M2 Discussion Boards. This must be all new work. And it must make sense to your readers. Further, good submissions will compel the readers to want more.
Responders: You have been applying and studying the elements of strong personal writing. Now, put your editor’s cap on. Does the work a group mate posted make sense? If not, please pinpoint the area of trouble for your group mate. Does the dialogue feel real? Does the sensory detail place you in the scene? Can you see, smell, hear and feel it? Can you follow the action? Again, compliments are nice, and a good way to begin a critique, but they are not going to help your group mates. The entire effort here is to help make each other’s work better.
