The U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) is an important reference, as it pertains to both sterile and non-sterile compounding. This reference provides guidelines for sterile compounds, nonsterile compounds, and for hazardous materials. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state boards of pharmacy recognize the USP chapters for as a guide for compounding.
