~8-12 pages, double spaced, plus citations/appendices.

? Question: What is your question or puzzle, and why does it
matter?
? Theory: What is your causal theory linking your independent
and dependent variables?
? NB: Itàokay to be testing/supporting/tweaking an
existing theory.
? What are your variables? How are they defined
conceptually?
? Alternative Explanations: What are the alternatives to
your theory? What evidence would falsify your theory
and/or support alternative theories?
? Operationalization: How are you measuring your DV? Your IV?
Variables relating to potential alternative explanations?
Why are these measures most appropriate? What are your units
of observation? Do they represent a population or a sample?
? Hypotheses: Formally state the null and alternative
hypotheses you are testing.
? Multivariate hypothesis test(s): Report the results of your
multiple regression (maximum likelihood) analysis. Be sure
to discuss the substantive interpretation of these results
(seriously, I can emphasize this enough).
? I want to know, as appropriate, the slope
coefficients, p-values, R-squared, n, confidence
intervals.
? Visualize the relationship using one or more
charts/graphs.
? Discussion
? What do the results imply for your theory and future
research?
