abridged edition).
I would like to explain the Chinese concept: “tianming” (Mandate of Heaven)
as it is connected to and significant for the Chinese people today. In
Chapter 1, the author discusses the legitimate ruler of the country. In class
discussions and in our notes, the legitimate rule of the country (governing
the Chinese people) should be virtuous and righteous, according to the
teachings in The Analects of Confucius (Lunyu), as discussed in class in the
first week of the course.
However, not everyone agrees. Those who are strong such as the first
emperor of China, Emperor Qinshihuang, felt that strength and possession of
a lot of territories was enough to rule the country and attacked the
Confucians and even buried 400 Confucian scholars, according to in-class
discussions.
In Three Kingdoms, Liu Bei is supported by many because he is connected to
the Liu family, the family ruling the Han dynasty. More importantly,
because he is virtuous and righteous, many Chinese will follow and be loyal
to him. On the other hand, Cao Cao, in the Three Kingdoms is portrayed in
many ways. However, it cannot be denied that he is in control of the largest
amount of territory and should be considered the one who should be the one
to govern/rule. The significance of these ideas and this novel is seen in
Chinese society today. An example is the references to Liu Bei and Cao Cao
in painting, sculpture, Chinese garden walls, wood carvings, Chinese Operas,
and more importantly in the minds of many Chinese people.
