Read Short Story: Fleur,¹ Louise Erdrich + Answer 2 Questions
Question Description
I’m working on a creative writing discussion question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
Read the short story Fleur, by Louise Erdrich (attached) and answer these 2 questions below:
1. What is the Chronic Tension, and what is the Acute of the story?
2. You may be familiar with the concept of the unreliable narrator. It could be argued that many facts are debatable, or that all human perspectives are necessarily subjective (and therefore unreliable by default), but for the purposes of teaching fiction, we can still get some mileage out of this idea. This term, first coined by Wayne C. Booth, describes a narrator whose version of events is questionable because of the way the story is told. Perhaps the narrator’s story has elements that do not add up or their version conflicts with what is otherwise known to be true in the story. In what ways does this narrator demonstrate her lack of trustworthiness? How are we to interpret what has actually happened here?
