Everyone,
For your portfolio, I want you to write a poem either about a character or from a characteràpoint of
view.
Itàup to you who you want to write about, but my suggestion would be a family member or a friend
because you know them well. But you can write about anyone.
To get a sense of how to approach writing about a character in a poem, watch the video of Ashley M.
Jones answering your questions below. Her first answer talks about surrendering yourself to the poem,
and about finding a way in to the character you want to write about.
As I said to Ashley in one of my questions to her, giving voice is the bedrock of writing. So part of
what I`asking you to do is to give voice to your mother, for example, telling us something about her
that stays with you, that connects you to her, or telling us about something that happened to her in her
voice.
Other things I’ll be looking for in your poemt least 10 lines (if you want to write a longer poem, do).
What will be the striking images you create? Use taste, touch, smell, sound when you can to bring
those images alive.
And how will you create the rhythm, the music of your poem on the page. Don use end rhyme´hatàoften how people think of poetry.
Instead create rhythm through repeating words, repeating sounds and images.
Your poem is due here by Thursday, December 8 at midnight.
