Watch the Saturday, November 12th, editions of PBS NewsHour and the NBC Nightly
News. Use what you learned from Rich Media, Poor Democracy in order to assess
the quality of information and reporting provided by NBC and PBS.

When you watch each news program, take note of the titles each program gives to the
stories they cover, the amount of time they devote to the stories covered, the use of
music and graphics to convey information, and the experts used to provide information
on the stories covered. After you watch both programs and gather your evidence, you
will want to write a 600 + word essay comparing the quality of journalism between the 2
news agencies. (600 is the bare minimum! You are welcome to go over 600, but not
under.)
Remember! According to Rich Media, Poor Democracy, quality journalism should 1)
give a diversity of opinions; 2) put a check on people in power; 3) check FACTS, not just
report opinions. You want to use these standards in order to assess PBS vs. NBC in
your essay.
