Assignment Description and Rubric
Description
The Exhibition or Photobook Review assignment will take the form of a 6-8 page paper on either
a trip to a museum or gallery to review an exhibition of photography or a photobook of your
choosing. This paper will require an analysis of the exhibition/photobook in the context of the
history, techniques, and language of photography. You are encouraged to share proposed
exhibitions with me before you start the paper.

What makes a compelling review?
A compelling review does much more than state whether the author likes the work or not, or
even whether they believe the work in question is ïod/r ¡d. ather, a compelling review
offers a persuasive assessment of a workàsignificance and meaning. Further, a compelling
review supports this assessment with interpretive evidence. If you want to write a compelling
review, you must constantly ask yourself, èy is this work worthy of my sustained attention?“o7hat should go in my review?
Here is a broad rubric for some of the things your instructor will look for in your review:
1. Thesis
Your thesis should provide an answer the questions, èy is this work significant?
What is the workàmeaning? Why should I pay attention to it?². Use of evidence
You can support your thesis using visual evidence, either of the work itself or its
method of display or construction. You can also use statements from artists,
curators, and other scholars to support your thesis.
3. Analysis
The paper displays critical thinking and avoids mere synthesis and summary of
information (¥portagen Think about concepts and questions covered in class. Are
any of them applicable to the work you are reviewing?
4. Mechanics
The writer proofread the paper to correct spelling errors, typos, run-on sentences,
and other grammatical errors. The paper demonstrates organizational clarity.
