I’m sure lots of you have seen a chart like this:
There are two popular media bias charts – this one from Ad Fontes media and another from a group called All Sides. Here’s a great article that explains the methodology used by each.
As the article suggests, these companies don’t necessarily argue that centrist sources are perfect or complete. Instead, they argue you should read across the spectrum (though I’m not sure I see a reason to use the most extreme sources). So, if you alternated between NPR, Reuters, and the Wall Street Journal, you’d have cover your bases. Those are sources I read a lot, and I find they mostly overlap. They all report the same objective facts.
How many of these sources do you use? What’s your sense of these charts and their accuracy? And if you’ve never used one of the wire services (the AP or Reuters) why not? If it’s this simple to identify the moderate, fact based sources, why don’t they dominate the competition?
