Philosophies of Life Discussion
Description
The ultimate point of Wittgenstein’s private-language argument (in Sections 243-315 of the PI) can be summarized as follows: there can be no such thing as a language that only one person can know (in an absolute sense), because language is necessarily born of the external world and used in the external world between two or more speakers.
- Do you agree or disagree with the private-language argument in Sections 243-315? Explain with a philosophical argument (refer to the Making Philosophical Arguments handout under Content -> Week One).
- Assume Wittgenstein’s private-language argument is right. Can language ever really capture the experience of the state of death (as opposed to the experience of one person when another person dies)?
