Each student is expected to produce a historiographical essay that explores significant issue, event, or
person in American History between 1700-1877.
A 1250 word research paper (5 pages) on an American historical topic of your choice between 17001877 as planned from your proposal. You may incorporate your proposal into your final paper. The
research paper is a 1250 word minimum, 12 point font, Times New Roman, double-spaced report in
which you will evaluate a historical event or person. At least two sources must be cited and used with
the correct Chicago format (or style format that your other classes are using). A bibliography must also
be included. When writing, try not just to summarize information but to also draw on it and develop an
argument of your own. Your interpretation should include an analysis of: its evolution over time;
primary sources; a historiographical analysis; and how it specifically relates to course materials.
NOTE: Internet sources (web sites) should be rarely used, if ever. Exceptions are scholarly websites
and documents available through the NWFSC Online Library (Wikipedia is not considered a valid
academic source).
