PCC Confronting the Ugly Era of Racism against Black Americans Research Paper
Description
Research papers consist of an introduction, background research, and conclusion on a topic involving a notable figure in the history of jazz. The topic should be on an issue which had an impact on the society and culture of the time and place of this individual, and which continues to have relevance in the present day. A quality research paper must also have a thesis (organizing argument) stating a proposition which will then be evaluated. The paper should begin with an introduction describing the topic, why you chose it, and stating your specific thesis. The middle of the paper will consist of background research on the music and culture pertaining to your chosen individual, and your interview. The paper should end with a conclusion that revisits the original thesis, highlights what you learned through your research about the connection between your subject and your topic, and how the experience has impacted or altered your views about jazz, culture, and the world around you.

Confronting the Ugly Era of Racism against Black Americans
Jazz music has long been used as a driver for social and political transformation. The
music of various jazz artists from the past and even current-day artists has been applied as a
means to find and sustain freedom among people (NYJW, 2018). For this assignment, I have
chosen Billy Holiday. Billie Holidays was born Eleanora Fagan, but she gave herself the stage
name Billie, naming herself after an early movie star named Billie Dove. While growing into
fame, Holiday encountered racism. During that time, some laws established separate public
spaces, facilities, and seats on public buses for Black Americans. Besides, some restaurants
would only serve white Americans but not black ones. Consequently, Holiday performed in
clubs that did not offer services to Black Americans.
I chose the above topic and artist because the artist paints a picture of the everyday
violence that Black Americans encounter. Besides, I found the artist interesting and worth
studying because one of her songs titled “Strange Fruit” is rated as the saddest and most haunting
expression of protest against inhumanity to Black people that has ever been created in the form
of jazz music (NYJW, 2018). In the above song, which was about the lynching of African
Americans, Holiday sang her heart out, expressing how she felt about the inhumanity she faced
as a Black American. Besides, Billie Holiday is worth studying because although she had a
challenging childhood and had no formal music training, she produced prominent and
professional music. In addition, her lyrics are still penetrating today and are as relevant as they
were when Holiday first created her music. Billie Holiday remains a celebrated Jazz artist to
date because her music reflects the inhumanity Black people have always faced compared
to their white counterparts. Holiday’s lyrics are still relevant today, owing to the particular
atmosphere where Black Americans’ rights are threatened almost daily (NYJW, 2018).
