OSU Hegemony in Screening Discussion
Description
respond to the screenings as examples of the hegemonic process described by Gitlin. Be specific. In what ways did the shows incorporate alternative or oppositional viewpoints or practices? How did the flexibility of the holiday genre accommodate holidays other than Christmas, while still maintaining the genre’s syntax? (Or, if you do not think that this happened, explain why.)
Keeping in mind that hegemonic ideology supports the economic basis of society (so, capitalism), describe in a few sentences what a truly oppositional or counter-hegemonic holiday film might be like. Can you imagine it? What would it be about? How would it work within or oppose the semantic and syntactic conventions of the genre? (The fact that this film does not really exist, at least within the mainstream culture, is a sign of hegemony at work.)
