An Exercise in Writing the Emotional Descriptive Paragraph
Instructions:
As you remember the scene from which you developed your descriptive catalogs, ask
yourself what you remember feeling (emotionally). Make a list of four or five features in
that scene that, working together, stimulate that feeling for you as you remember it.
Then, write a descriptive paragraph describing the scene but introducing only those
features that contribute to that feeling. Arrange your descriptive sentences in a pattern
that will help to stimulate that feeling in a reader of your paragraph.
Note: Make no mention of yourself or any other person/observer. Don name any
emotion; rather, choose only visual descriptive details from two or more of your catalogs
that contribute to that feeling.
A Sample Emotional Paragraph
In the creek, debris collects in pockets along the banks and at the head of the dam.
Near a cluster of dead reeds along the bank, an old shoets tongue washed out and its
laces tangled over its wedged in the mud and slime. Crushed paper cups twirl on
ripples over the surface of the murky water as it passes toward the dam. Stagnant and
choked, a small, isolated puddle of water, locked between crevices of rocks, is pungent
with the smell of a rotten fish floating upon its back.
