Step 1: Find a news story that you do not believe
- It can be about anything, but ideally, it conveys some information that you find important, but are skeptical of.
- The easiest way to do this is to go to a news source you do not trust.
- Once you¥ found one, post the URL to the news story in your notes.
Step 2: Investigate the context of the story
Take notes (using your own note-taking tools) to document:
- Who wrote the story? Can you find their biography? Their training? Their position? Their social media account? Learn everything you can about them.
- When did they write it? Was it investigative journalism performed over a long period of time? Or rapid, near real-time reporting?
- Why did they write it? Is this their ¥atàWhat other stories have they written? What does their Twitter account, if you found it, say about their politics, beliefs, and values?
Step 3: Write a brief post reporting on and summarizing what you found.
- Put the topic in the title of your post.
- It should be purely verbal, with no visual aid.
- It should contain:
- What your story was about (a headline and summary)
- Who wrote it
- What you learned about them
- When they wrote it
- Your best guess about why they wrote it
- The URL for the news story you are summarizing
