Task: Create a single slide that is a poster on a topic of your choice that relates to geology in some way. The poster
is to be in PDF form as submitted but can be made in any graphic program you want to use. Most students use
PowerPoint and save the slide as a PDF. Example topics include but are not limited to:
Persons of diversity in geoscience / STEM (e.g., Mary Anning); planets, moons, asteroids, meteorites, impact
structures or events; a given volcano, mountain chain, or hot spot; a rock, mineral, or gem; a company or government
agency; a waterborne disease, asbestos, silicosis, or water contamination; climate change, landslides, hurricanes; or
any topic that has a connection to geology. If you need help identifying a topic 0lease ask.
Points (450 points, which is greater than 2 tests) will be assigned based on:
ontent Quality (~1/3 of points). It is recommended that you have at least 250 words of content in well
written language, that is logical and follows a theme. Shrink font size as needed.
Visual Communication (~1/3 of points) You need to have a visually appealing poster which has at least 3
images in some way (T grade posters usually have 4-8 images in some way) and an appropriate
background. The images may be directly from other sources but need to be cited in small print on the image.
Images need to support the theme of the poster and be of quality ( not grainy).
Neatness, Clarity, References (~1/3 of points). Text, images, and references need to be present in an
organized fashion, appropriate size, proportions, and clarity. Items need to be cited and you are not to simply
cut and paste text from sources 4hat is academic dishonesty.
The project will be due ELECTRONICALLY at your designated exam time DURING FINALS WEEK. HOWEVER,
posters will be accepted through Friday of exam week (11:59 pm). Posters cannot be accepted after this date owing
to grading and end of semester obligations. An example of a poster to far exceed in quality is below.
The poster above would be graded as a 70% (missing 135 points). There are 3 images with little description, the
images are not aligned. Much of the poster is vacant or empty. The text is ragged on both sides and there is only one
reference. The background color does not really match the images. This poster could be improved by (1) having
multiple images (such as 7 or 8) of the same size and format arranged in a regular fashion. (2) One image could be
dedicated to the methods of how exoplanets are found and another image could be on the habitable zone. (3) Examples
of showing the range of exoplanets would be appropriate images. (4) Text under each image and explanations of how
exoplanets are found would be good. (5) Four to eight references written in short, abbreviated form would be
appropriate (e.g., Smith, J.V., Jones. A.S, (2018) Journal of Space Sciences 104: 45-67.). (5) a good title and student
name are required. (6) A balanced neat color scheme and text would help.
