Moraine Valley Community College Food As Power Nutrition Question
Description
Food is strongly linked to power, as we discussed in class. Examples we discussed include gender roles in preparing and procuring foods, access to food for different communities, international trade of food commodities, the power of humans over the environment, issues related to colonialism/imperialism, the exploitation of agricultural workers, and many more.
For this assignment, describe a food or a food-related item that has connections to power. You can choose to write about a food-power relationship that is personal to you and/or your community (community can be defined any way you like. For example, family, friends, country, religion, neighborhood, school, etc.) or to write about one of the food-power relations we discussed in class or even a food-power that has meaning to you even if it’s not something we discussed in class. You can write in the first or third person, as you like.
Make sure to include the following elements:
Name the food or food-related item (crop, trees, eating/cooking utensils, etc) you are writing about.
Clearly identify the power relations involved (gender roles, age, race/ethnicity, migration, colonialism, imperialism, etc.).
- Explain how and why this specific food or food-related item is linked to a power relationship.
- Explain the reasons why the specific food-power relationship you selected is meaningful for you.
