Once you have your proposal returned, you can choose which artwork to explore more in depth (or select another one based on feedback if necessary). Ultimately choose only one artwork.
What you, turn in as a single Word Document:
Image of your selected artwork, the Title, Artist, Date, Medium and Museum (25 points)
Works Cited (25 points)
- Summary of Context (50 points)
- Outline of Critical Analysis (50 points)
- Reflection (50 points)
- Research and Context. To understand more about the artwork discover more about its Context through research. Context is everything surrounding the work of art, that helps us understand its location in place and time- so who made it and why?
- Works Cited Page: Find 2-3 quality sources to help you better understand the artistænbsp;work. articles or books, interviews, or other material that you think would be useful to understand the artworkænbsp;creation and history (and how it resonates today). Do not just do a quick Google search of the artist- use the library. Websites like artstory.com & artincontext.com may not be used.
Summary of Context. (200-300 words) Summarize what you discover about the artist, their background, and artistic influences. What is revealed as being the goals of their art? What do they want their art to áy®bsp;and how do you see that influenced by their context (what in the world around them are they responding to?)
Critical Analysis. Building on the earlier extended looking you did with the artwork, you will now re-word and organize your descriptions of what you see into the categories of formal elements we¥ exploring in the class.
Brainstorm what you see. To warm-up on a piece of paper jot down all the things you see in the artwork, relating to shape, color, line, value, form, space, texture, etc. (all the visual elements) and how they are organized with balance, contrast, unity, etc. (the design principles). To fuel this pretend you are describing the artwork who can see it over text and be detailed enough that they can perfectly imagine the image. You don need to turn this in.
Outline Critical Analysis. For this section you will create an outline similar to the Critical Analysis outlines at the end of each chapter in the book, analyzing 4 specific aspects (included as headings in the chapter) of the art work that you feel most impact the artwork and how your experience of it. Each aspect should be analyzed in 150-200 words. Concentrate on the elements that reveal what the artist is trying to communicate. This should be formatted to look like the charts at the end of the chapters in the book. (See below)
Reflection. (200-300 words). After Research and Critical Analysis what do you think about the artwork you selected? What do you think it means or what are the ideas that it brings up and connects with? What do you think the artist intended to communicate through the artwork?

Artist: Pierre-Auguste Renoir
This piece of art caught my eye, because there are a lot of explanations, or stories you can
make about it. This piece of art shows a woman in a white dress, and a man holding her hand in
what looks like a forest. It sort of looks like they’re running away from something. Which caught
my eye the most.

Artist: J.M.W. Turner
This piece of art caught my eye, because of the beautiful detailing in it. At first glance you may
not notice all the people in the mountain, it looks like they live there. Because there are children,
and it looks like they have goats, and other wildlife around them. Not only is it the people that
caught my attention. But it was also the colors and the stone art, J.MW. Turner did a really good
job with the detailing.

Artist: Jan Brueghel the Elder
This piece was by far my favorite, I think it’s because I like all sorts of animals. Seeing all the
animals together and at peace is really soothing. Because there are always pray, and predators
trying to attack or run away from each other. The artist also did a really good job at making it
look angelic, and detailed at the same time.
