PURPOSE:
You have spent a good bit of time researching and reflecting on your chosen topic for our work
during this course. Now you have the chance to bring all that work together in an argument that
attempts to persuade a reader to change their thinking or their behavior, because you¥ figured
out a better way to think about (or to act in response to) a particular issue! Trust yourself! You¥
invested a great deal of effort in our past assignments, and you can feel confident that you have a
valuable perspective to contribute to the ongoing discussion of the topic! This is your
opportunity to ©nd your voice!nd let your reader know what you think, because what you
think IS important!
TASK:
For this assignment, you should use the feedback you received on your draft thesis to compose a
researched argument(at is, an argument in which you lay out the best case for that thesis, in
order to convince a reader to think the way you want them to or to do what you say they should
do. Your evidence will come from the research you gathered during your work on the Annotated
Bibliography; you should connect that evidence to your thesis using the (different kinds and
categories of) reasons we discussed in class.
CRITERIA FOR SUCCESS:
?
The topic for the Final Researched Argument must come from the list of Possible Topics
found on the syllabus (and as reflected in the assigned readings and viewings).
Remember that, if you¥ planning to count this class towards the concentrations in
WGSS or PSJ, you should choose a topic from those specific lists.
?
The research for the writing project should come from the databases provided by the
Oakton library, with some allowances made for Google Scholar and search engines that
serve wider, popular audiences. This does not include general reference sources, such as
non-specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias. (For instance: The Encyclopedia of
Philosophy entry on a philosopher would be acceptable; the Wikipedia or Britannica
entry on that same philosopher would not.
?
The Works Cited page should be a separate page and formatted according to MLA 9
guidelines. Note that, while such site as the Purdue OWL include citation generators,
you still have to input the correct information in order to generate the
correctly-formatted citation.
?
Both quoted AND paraphrased material should be documented using parenthetical
citation, following MLA 9 guidelines.
?
The discussion should be organized by topic, not by source, as demonstrated in the
Sample Essays published under Content.
?
The discussion of each topic should synthesize or bring and weave together multiple
(rather than single) sources.
?
The final project should be submitted to the Assignments folder, rather than emailed or
posted under a previously-used Discussions topic.
Be sure to review the Sample Writing Projects (posted under Content). You, recall from our
class discussions that they demonstrate how to:
? Position your thesis so that your reader has the best chance to know what you want them
to think or to do after reading your argument
? Construct effective topic or opening sentences so that your reader understands how each
paragraph connects to the thesis (or how the individual points you raise connect to the
larger argument)
? Make clear to your reader how each piece of evidence connects to the topic of the
paragraph
? Document your use of research using parenthetical citation (so that your reader can
distinguish your own thinking from that of the writers you cite) and a Works Cited page
(so that your reader can locate those sources on their own)
? Discuss those arguments or perspectives that disagree with your own, addressing the
opposition in a way that helps to bolster your credibility (to show that you understand
different, competing points of view) and to strengthen your own argument (by
¥moving4hat opposition)
? Introduce your argument in a way that provides an effective context for your thesis
? Conclude your argument so as to emphasize the value or importance or significance of
your thesis.
