Temperature
(Due December 14)
Introduction
Throughout this course, you mainly learned that the working principles of strain gauges and
thermocouples used in mechanical and thermal measurements, respectively. A wide variety of
techniques exists in the market for measuring strain, stress, and temperature. In this project, you
will research on a measurement technique that you are interested and self-study the basic
working principle, advantages, disadvantages, and applications of the technique. The report
should be word-processed, 1.5 spaced, and font size 12.
Subject 1: Strain/Stress measurement is important in mechanical testing. A wide variety of
techniques exist for measuring strain, including strain gauge, extensometer, deflectometer,
machine crosshead motion, geometric moire, speckle pattern shearing interferometry, and optical
strain measurement techniques and others. Each technique has its own advantages and
disadvantages.
Subject 2: Temperature is a fundamentally important quantity in science and engineering, both
in concept and practice. There are different types of temperature measurement techniques used in
the market, including thermocouples, thermistors, RTDs, infrared radiators, pyrometers,
bimetallic strip, and semiconductor sensors. Each technique has its own advances and
disadvantages.
Project Tasks
1. Choose a measurement technique that you want to investigate (from subject 1 or subject
2).
2. Write a short project report (5 pages with references) including the following:
1) Describe the working principle of the measurement system/technique that you chose.
2) Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the measurement system/technique that
you chose against other measurement methods (at least two). Discuss the
characteristics in terms of measurement range, cost, stability, sensitivity, and
linearity, and so on. (For example, thermocouple vs. RTDs vs. Infrared radiators)
3) Describe the particular applications of the measurement system/technique that you
chose.
4) Discuss what you learned from your research.
