WEEK 4 ASSIGNMENT
?
List four elements used in DFDs, draw the symbols, and explain how they are used.
.
The four elements used in Data Flow Diagrams are as follows:
rocess
ata store
xternal Entity
ata flow
Process: This process alters or transforms the entering data into an output, manipulating
the data. Rectangles with rounded sides that depict operations (which mainly include
input-processing-output) have three descriptive elements:
Data store: Within a system, information is kept in a data store. A slender, open-ended
rectangle is used to depict it. Data stores can be short-term accumulations, like batches
of papers awaiting processing or long-term files like sales ledgers. The reference should
be followed by an arbitrary number for each data storage.
External Entity: An external procedure or system that transmits or receives data to and
from the system shown in the figure. They are depicted by squares and go by sources,
terminators, sinks, or actors.
Data flow: The movement of information from its source to its destination is shown by a
data flow. A line with arrowheads indicating the flow direction serves as a representation
of data flow. Written, spoken, or electronic information always flows to or from a process.
The processes or data storage at the head and tail of each data flow and a description of
its contents may serve as references.
