LU Music Charley Patton Public Response to His Music Paper
Question Description
I’m working on a music writing question and need an explanation and answer to help me learn.
One of the most important elements of early jazz music was the blues. Unfortunately, there are no recordings available of early blues artists prior to the 1920ì and even then the earliest recordings attributed to the blues (W.C. Handy, Mamie Smith) were not very representative of the guitar-driven delta blues that developed along the Mississippi river in the late 1800àand early 1900î
However, many of those artists were recorded later on in life and it gives us some sense of what the music sounded like prior to the first jazz recordings.
Create short profile of one of these early blues artists.
For your initial thread:
Enter the name of the artist in your thread subject line.
Write a paragraph that includes the following information:
- The name of the blues artist
- Birth/death dates (or the best information available)
- The town/state/region where they lived and worked
- Any information related to non-music occupations (most early blues artists did not exclusively play music for their income)
- Any information related to the public response to their music. Were they famous while alive, or did people appreciate their music more after the fact?
- At least one link (Spotify, YouTube, etc.) to a recording of either your favorite song by the artist, or one of their most well-known songs. Include any information about the recording, but the date (year) is an absolute requirement. If you have trouble deciding, you can post links to more than one song by that artist.
- What it is that you found intriguing about this artist.
