AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (DAl a disability is defined as:
? a physical or mental impairment
? that substantially limits one or more major life activities.
The ADA has five parts, or titles (remember Title VII of the Civil Rights Act that we discussed
earlier in the course? Then you¥ got the right idea). Title I of the ADA concerns employment.
Generally speaking, if one of your employees or applicants has a recognized disability, you
must comply with Title I.
Title III of the ADA applies to public accommodations. Examples of public accommodations
include restaurants, stadiums, theaters, and shopping malls. Title III of the ADA is where we get
requirements for ramps, Braille lettering, curb cuts, etc.
In this weekàreading, the text discussed the Americans with Disabilities Act. Please visit the
ADA website and, specifically, take a look at the complaints that have been filed under the ADA
before you begin this assignment. You can access that page of the ADA website by clicking
