For the first part of this project, I want you identify a ïntested space)n your community. I will carefully explain what a contested space is during one of our zoom sessions and I will also refer you to Chapter 10. There is much in the chapter that should help with your understanding. I suggest that you read it. Explain why your space is a ïntested space.Identify the ¡ried groups and agencies of the city7ho contest the use of this space. Why do these groups or agencies feel that they have the right to access or use this space? Explain the complexities of this situation. Where exactly is this space? Show us on a map! Be very specific. Go to the location, take pictures and detailed notes. Describe the size, shape, depth, colors, spaces adjacent, how it is used, and how it is used at different times of the day or during different seasons. Please do not be vague. I want a clear mental picture painted for me with your words. Precise descriptions and details. Does the contestation involve issues of race, class, gender, sexual identify, ecology, history, or something not easily understood? Explain. Provide us with a complete overview of this space. Make things crystal clear.
Once you have found your chosen contested space, you must conceptualize a resolution to this particular contestation. This resolution could involve you making an artistic intervention, devising a rational, pragmatic solution, or it could involve local politics or grassroots organizing. The resolution could involve bringing people together regardless of bad feelings, prejudices, or uncomfortable histories. Your attempt at resolving the issues associated with this contested space does not have to ïlve4he issues at hand but could rather get the conversation started or lay the foundation for a resolution no matter how small, or large, it might be.
