KIN 3353 Louisiana State University Benefits of Exercise Paper
Description
KIN 3353 ®bsp;Paper Guidelines
Write a letter explaining the benefits of exercise training from a physiological perspective.
Physical Education majors should write the letter to their school board in order to convince them that physical education is necessary for high school students.
Fitness and Human Performance majors and other majors should write the letter to a friend, family member, or client convincing them of the importance of physical activity.Your letter should address the following
- beneficial physiological adaptations that occur with exercise training that we have discussed in class.
- overall benefit of physical activity on disease risk (cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes, etc.).
explain both the adaptations and underlying cause for the adaptation (ex: stroke volume increases, but what causes that increase?).
- The best papers will make at least 20 unique, substantive physiological points that are properly explainedFormatting
- While you need to address key exercise physiology concepts, you should do so in lay speech (see example below).
- o Technical Jargon ®bsp;Cardiovascular exercise increases stroke volume, so that a given cardiac output can be achieved at a lower heart rate.
- o Lay Speech ®bsp;Aerobic exercise training, such as jogging/walking, results in the heart being able to pump more blood with each beat (stroke volume). This is beneficial because the heart can then achieve a given overall output (cardiac output), while not working as hard or beating as frequently (heart rate).

Muscles Increase
Increased heart rate
Stroke volume increases
Catecholamine release increases
Glycogenolysis release increases
Insulin levels increase
Slow or stop the development of Diseases
Improve blood flow
8 reasons for Adaptations
1) Muscles increase because exercise forces our muscle fibers to contract and
stretch repeatedly
2) Increased heart rate cause by enlargement of cardiac dimension, improved
contraction, increased blood volume, allowing for greater filling in ventricles and
consequent larger stroke volume
3) Stroke volume increases by pumping more forcefully & increasing the amounts of
blood that fills the left ventricle before it pumps.
4) Catecholamine release increases because this increases the supply of oxygen and
fuel to the working muscles.
5) Glycogenolysis release increases because more ATP is required and this comes
from glycogenesis. This process requires that muscle cells break down glycogen
to glucose via the glycogen phosphorylase pathway2.
6) Insulin levels increase because carbs are needed. Carbs are the main stimulus that
causes insulin blood levels to rise. When the body converts carbs into sugar and
releases it into the blood, the pancreas releases insulin to transport the sugar from
the blood into the cells
7) Exercise can slow or stop the development of diseases because exercise causes
change in antibodies and white blood cells (WBC). WBCs are the body’s immune
system cells that fight disease.
8) Blood flow is increased because Exercising regularly improves blood flow by
strengthening the heart and blood vessels, bolstering this filtration system.
