You are part of a close group of friends and colleagues that have secured funding to create a business that
will develop an amazing and revolutionary app that will be used on smartphones. This circle of friends
makes you the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the business.
The software for the app has not yet been written and the company has asked you to hire external
software engineers to actually create the app. When the app is fully developed, it will represent new and
innovative technology not previously seen on the market.
The business model of the app generates revenue through two streams: 1) Initial purchase of the app, and
2) Monthly fees that are automatically charged to each customeràcredit card. The business will keep the
billing address, credit card information, and banking information of each customer in the corporate
database. When customers purchase the app, they agree to an End User License Agreement (EULA). The
EULA stipulates that all personal and financial customer information shared through the app with the
company will not be sold without the customeràconsent.
Development of this app has generated a lot of publicity that has already created a pool of expected
customers. As a result, the company plans to become a publically-traded corporation on the New York
Stock Exchange (NYSE) before next year.
One of your friends is a co-owner of this business and part-owner of a separate marketing company. She
thinks the database of the appàcustomers and their personal information could greatly help her
marketing company. Since you are the CIO and have access to the customer information database, she
offers you the following proposition: she will give you cash, off both companies accounting records, for
each batch of personal information of 1,000 customers that have bought the app.
