HU Immune Responses Against Microorganisms Article Questions
Description
Read the article and answer the following questions. Make sure to put all of the answers in your own words, not just quoting or even close paraphrasing what was in the paper itself.
1. Explain why it may be evolutionarily more beneficial for fibroblasts to have immune functions rather than their just being more classically defined immune cells (like macrophages) present in connective tissue? (5pts)
2. Please pick one example of a specific microbe that fibroblasts can detect. What class of microorganism are they (of the four classes), which of the molecules they have (PAMPs) do the fibroblasts detect, and what toll like receptor (TLR) does the fibroblast use to detect them? (5pts)
3. In just a sentence or two, please explain to a non-scientist what an antimicobial peptide is and what it does. Be sure to not use jargon! (5pts)
4. Scientists love anthropomorphizing or using real world things to explain the functions of molecules. What is a real world example of something that functions similarly to chemokines? (For example, I talk about degranulation as shooting toxic bullets. The contents of granules are kept “safely” inside immune cells but then are released and kill once a cell is triggered.) (5pts)
5. Would you consider a fibroblast an immune cell? Why or why not? (5pts)
