Methods of Research in Human Learning and Development
Article Critique
You should locate an empirical research article in a peer-reviewed journal. “Empirical”
means that the article is based on data collected in the field during the course of research
conducted by the authors themselves. In other words, editorial or opinion-type articles,
law journal reviews or briefs, or articles that are primarily reviews of the research
literature will NOT satisfy the requirements of this assignment.
Please read the article and cite it using proper APA format. Please review the article
answering the following questions. (Please answer each question individually and include
the question before your response).
1. Article citation (Please cite in proper APA form).
2. What was the purpose of the study (include research objectives, research
questions, and/or research hypothesis)?
3. What paradigm and/or theoretical orientation is the research aligned with? (This
may not be stated specifically by the author(s) but you should be able to deduce.
Justify your response).
4. Describe the research context. Where did the study take place?
5. Does the research conform to ethical guidelines (Sometimes this is mentioned
and sometimes it is not mentioned; if the author does not mention ethics, please
say that)?
6. What was the methodology used?
7. What methods were utilized for data collection? Be specific about what the
researcher(s) actually did (i.e. What instrument was administered? Who
administered it? How many observations or interviews did the researcher
conduct? How long was the researcher in the field?). What are the data sources?
Was enough data collected to adequately answer the research questions?
Why/why not?
8. Who were the participants involved? How were they sampled? Did this seem to
be a valid procedure? Why/why not?
9. Who was the researcher(s)? Does the researcher openly discuss
himself/herself? If so, how does this change (or not) your perception of the
research? If the researcher does not mention who he/she is, how does this shape
your perception of the research?
10. How were data analyzed? What procedures were used?
11. What are the main results of the study? Summarize the findings.
12. Do you think the conclusions reached by the researcher(s) are valid? Why/why
not?
13. Overall, do you think the study makes an important contribution to advancing
knowledge? Explain.
14. Which part of the study was the most illuminating? Why?
