CHOICE 1: DRUGS AND SOCIAL DETERMINANTS
The controversy of SOCIETY and drug use is complex. What really is the bias with drug use
about? Is it race? Money? Education? What may be a condition that will encourage more drug
use and what are things that may help prevent use? SOCIAL DETERMINANTS are factors
many of us have little control over. It is our race, our income, our education, our upbringing.
Write a paper that explores the factors that confound this controversial issue. First explore drug
abuse statistics across race (do certain drugs have certain racial profiles?) . Then research
factors such, poverty, socio-economic status (not just low income but how does higher income
impact drug use, criminal prosecution (does race impact drug punishment?) and family factors
(abuse, neglect or genetics for example). Discuss each of these factors in at least one short
paragraph each. Follow up with ONE conclusion on social determinants and drug use based
on what you learned to summarize your paper. Your last paragraph should have a conclusion
based on all the factors together.
Please have at least one fact that supports your point in each factor. Please use references.

*Overall incarceration rate for users. Describe the racial mix of incarceration. Compare
use and incarceration rate for all users vs certain minorities.
*Impact of socioeconimics (do users have more or less money)
*Impact of family (if the person has a family member with drugs, went to school, had
trauma etc)
*What is the recovery rate of this drug? (what % can kick the habit, are you more likely to
get off if a certain race or have a certain income level)
5 points conclusion: discuss how what you researched enables you to draw conclusions
on racial impacts of drug use.

CHOICE 2: DRUGS AND YOUR BODY
Drug use impacts the body in many ways. Write a paper that explores the various ways drugs
effect the body. Pick one drug. Include one paragraph each on the impact of that drug on the
central nervous system (CNS and neurotransmitters), pregnancy, chronic disease, and
communicable diseases. Describe what the overdose (or death use) rate of the substance is.
Then research how easy or hard it is to give up this drug and come clean. You must have
statistics to show us numbers on how likely recovery is. Give at least one supporting fact in
each category. Discuss each of these factors in at least one short paragraph each. That
means each paragraph should have at least one reference.
