The key to success in business is the ability to gather, organize, and interpret information.
Systems analysis and design is a proven methodology that helps both large and small
businesses reap the rewards of utilizing technology to its full capacity. In this module, each
student will be assigned to a team to work on the below assigned system analysis and design
project. Team Members can reach out to each other via various collaboration tools. (i.e.
Google Workspace)
This project is an integral part of the course, since it allows students to apply the concepts,
methodologies, and tools learned in this course. Team participation is a critical component of
your success. Each team should select a Project Manager. Once selected, the project
manager should notify the instructor of their selection via email. Each team member will be
emailed a peer evaluation to rate other team members participation.
Problem Statement for Team Project:
Suppose you work in the I.T. department of Best Western Hotels, a multi- national hotel
chain. Best Western Hotels runs several specialized business support systems, including a
guest reservations system that was developed in-house to meet the requirements of a large
company with worldwide operations. Guests can make one-stop online reservations by
visiting Best Westernàwebsite, which has links to all major travel industry sites. Best
Western Hotels just acquired Mommaì a regional chain of 20 motels in western Canada.
Mommaàuses a vertical reservations package suitable for small to medium sized businesses,
and a generic accounting and finance package. Best Western does not want to continue use
of the current specialized business support systems and would like a system analyst and
team to develop a new IT system that would support their entire hotel chain.
As a system analyst team, each team will prepare a 10 slide minimum PowerPoint
presentation that would communicate visual and clear business needs to system developers
that would develop this new proposed IT system to support Best Western Hotels new
business requirement. The systems development life cycle (SDLC) should be used. Currently,
Best Western uses Guestlineàtwo-way PMS interface that connects directly with their
Central Reservations System (CRS). More information on Best Western’s current technology
usage can be found via the teams internet searching. The following slides must be included
in your presentation and questions answered:
1. SWOT Anaylsis: Current System vs New System Strengths, Weaknesses,
Opportunities and Threats.
2. Business Case Slide: Why are we doing this project? How does this new project
address key business issues? Is there a Return on Investment (ROI) with the new
system?
3. Planning Slide: How will building this new system be approached?
