When you discuss the film, you will be graded on how well you connect the film to concepts and ideas presented in the textbook and the articles in the University Reader that are assigned for Unit Four or any of the previous units.

Film discussions are open for a limited time. Once the discussion closes, you may no longer post threads or replies, but you will be able to read the discussion. You cannot make up a discussion. If you miss it, you will not get credit.

Your initial thread post is the due date as listed on the Calendar, but the discussion is opened earlier and closes later so that you may post all of your responses to other threads by the end of the discussion period.

For this and all future discussions, here is what you do:

A. Post in the forum by providing a brief (5 sentences? 1 paragraph?) analysis along with your thoughts and questions but not reactions or opinions about the film. An analysis is a tentative explanation of events or situations found in the film. Raise a question for others to discuss also; and,

B. Respond thoughtfully to other students’ posts. As a discussant, you are to post thoughtful answers to other peopleàthreads. Thoughtful answers bring in analysis, more information from the film, articles or the text book, and extend the discussion. These replies are part of your grade.

OPINIONS or personal anecdotes are not exactly analysis. Use concepts from the book in your analysis to keep the discussion within the bounds of anthropology. Reactions or opinions are not the same as thoughts. Thoughts apply reasoning and critique; reactions and opinions are judgments or emotional responses that do little to advance an analysis unless they are accompanied by reasoning.

Extending the discussion means you add information or ideas. Replies that fall along the line of “great insight to the film” or “I loved what you said,” are kind in nature but are meaningless unless accompanied by evidence or ideas that support your ideas.

C. You must reply at least once to TWO other posts made by your classmates.
