Organizations, agents and players need to gather as much information as possible to plan negotiation strategies and apply leverage when drafting contracts. One method to obtain information about your rivals is to use the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

Each state also has a version of the Freedom of Information Act that governs State institutions.  Some States just borrow the same name, others have an entirely different statute name, such as Missouri Sunshine Law.  As you request information, it’s crucial to understand what law governs that particular institution.  A little research and a solid dash of common sense will be your best guide on that front.

For this assignment, you will draft an FOIA letter to an institution to obtain the contract of a collegiate coach.

Your letter should include:

A specific person or office that you are making the request to

the person whose contract you want to see

make sure you are specific.

reference to the applicable State law (i.e. Missouri Sunshine Act); and

reference to your status as a student.
