  1. Activate background knowledge and discuss some interesting features of the text by introducing a K-W-L chart. Have students complete the KWL before/during/after reading the text.
  2. Pre-teach or teach vocabulary in context. Provide definitions and examples by utilizing a graphic organizer such as the Frayer model.
  3. Preview the nonfiction text features 3kim the text, read headings, and/or read segments of the text. These activities may be done as a large group, small group, sustained silent reading, or some combination of classroom organization.
  4. Focus on the ëill/f the week or a combination of skills. Select the informational text structure skill of the week. (description, sequence, problem/solution, cause/effect or compare/contrast). Select a graphic organizer that students will complete such as: cause and effect on a T-chart, compare and contrast on a Venn diagram, etc.
  5. Select an activity where students evaluate questions in regards to the text that is being read and have them select which type of question format is being introduced. Be sure to include at least one type of question for each QAR type (Right There, Think and Search, On My Own and Author and Me).
  6. Have students summarize the text by completing the paragraph shrinking activity.

To demonstrate mastery of the 6 elements laid out in the assignment, create a lesson plan that shows the strategies outlined in #s 1-6 and then write a reflection that discusses the implementation OR provide artifacts of how these strategies have been addressed in your class (such as pictures of student work) with a reflection that discusses how it was implemented.
