The Importance of Social Awareness
How often do you stop and take a second to think about the emotions of others? How they might
be feeling that day? What might they be thinking? For most of us, the answer to this is almost
never. Most of us are so wrapped up in our own lives, our own struggles, and our own thoughts,
that we don bother taking the time to think about others. This is a huge mistake and a big
problem in our society. The skill of social awareness is very important and can make a drastic
difference in your life and those around you.
What is Social Awareness?
Simply put, social awareness is the ability to recognize and connect to emotions in others. It is
about attempting to take our focus off of ourselves for a bit and instead thinking about the people
around us. Thinking about how they feel, what they are thinking about, and how our actions
affect them. This skill does require a lot of selflessness from the individual. Putting your own
thoughts and emotions in the background and focusing on others can be a very difficult task, but
it is very important in creating successful relationships and interactions.
Empathy
The biggest concept of social awareness is the ability to see a situation from someone elseÊperspective and recognize what they are feeling, this is called empathy. This is a term that most
of you have probably heard before. Many of us think we are good at this skill, but we might not
realize it is more difficult than we may think. We think that when we listen to another personÊproblem and tell them how to fix it that we did a good job. Well, we understood their problem
and told them the solution thatàgood right? Not exactly.
