CCA103
So, here’s the plan. a 2-part writing.
PART 1:
1) Interview an older family member or friend (or a random person!). Ask them about a film that
they watched that greatly influenced them. Not the film they liked the most, but most
influenced his/her/their life. WHY did it influence them? What were the elements they remember
best?
2) Then, go and watch the film. (even if you have seen it before! Rewatch it.)
3) Feel free to go back to your interviewee and talk about the film now that you¥ watched it. It
will give you additional insight.
3) Write a 500-1000 word essay. The essay should have two parts. Part 1: describe your
interview. Please be as extensive as possible. Include details about the interview and the content
discussed.
Part 2: use your CINEMATIC LANGUAGE to write about different elements of the film.
Think about every aspect we have discussed in our course. How did the film use sound design?
How did it use editing to tell the story? Is the director considered an auteur? How did the director
use mise-en-scene in the film? Was the performance in some way exceptional? How did the
actor or actor use their “tools” to invoke emotion or get the story across? Was the film part of a
film movement? What was unique about the narrative structure? Was the screenplay particularly
well written? How was cinematography and shot choice used? ETC. Please pull from terms
and aspects I discussed in the lectures for each of these subjects.
You do not have to address every topic, but please think critically about the film you have
watched. However, if you write about GONE WITH THE WIND and don’t mention Golden Age
of Hollywood, that would not be good.
4) Finally, mention how the film affected you–did you find it influential in your life? Has the
film aged well or not? Did you enjoy the viewing or no?
PART 2:
SHORT ANSWERS
At the bottom of your review, answer these questions. These answers should be short–two or
three sentences each. You can use any film, but do not use a film that has not been professionally
produced (as in, a friendàfilm that I probably haven seen) or a film that was never released in
the United States.
1. Editing: which filmàediting style most influenced your viewing experience and why.
2. Sound: describe a creative use of sound design in a film.
3. Mise-en-scene: name and describe a filmàmise-en-scene that you most noticed and
why?
4. Auteur Theory: either name your favorite auteur and why, or make a case for why a
director of your choice should be consider an auteur.

5. Performance: pick an actorïactressàperformance in a film and name the /ols4hey
used to effectively portray that character in the film. Alternatively, you can pick a poor
performance and describe what made it was poor.
6. Which film movement would you most like to make a film for and why?
HOW TO TURN IT IN:
There will be a space provided under ASSIGNMENTS where you can upload your examµst
like your film responses. Part 1 and Part 2 should all be put on the same document.
DUE DATE:
December 9th by 11:59pm
GRADING:
Your final exam is 30% of your grade. I will grade this exam on completion, on-time
submission, application of cinematic language, thoroughness of your answers, and thoughtprovoking perspective. I will be looking for indications that you absorbed information I gave
in the lectures and have applied the information to this assignment.
Please reach out with any questions. Enjoy this assignment (as much as one can enjoy a final
exam, I get it© but consider that talking about movies with friends and family is one of the
great conversations in life. Then, watching that movie and seeing where the person was coming
from could be a magical movie moment. I hope you, see it this way and have some fun with it.
Best regards,
Margaret
