After reading the two articles on diet as medicine in Chapter 9, answer each of the following questions fully. What’s meant by “fully” is thinking about the question, coming up with several points you want to make, and explaining your answer completely. You can make a list of ideas and their explanations. Your answers don’t need to be written in fully developed paragraphs.Purpose:  As part of the preparation for the final exam, WA #4, thinking critically about this topic will be necessary.  Perhaps you agree fully with this topic of food as medicine.  Perhaps you have some reservations and can see some problems with the idea.  Being able to think critically about a topic and express your opinions effectively is a valued skill in school and in life.  

Task:  Answer the following questions fully.  This may mean thinking about (brainstorming) various ideas before you decide on the points you want to make and then explaining your points completely.

1.)  Many people would prefer to take a pill for a medical problem simply because it is easier than making a major change in their lifestyle.  How might a doctor (or another health professional) help these people be motivated to change the way they plan meals, shop for food, and cook?

2.)  Is a doctor or health professional the most reliable source for this information?  Why or why not?  What other sources might be just as effective?

3.)  Companies that manufacture drugs make billions of dollars a year.  How might they react to doctors reducing prescriptions in favor of teaching people how to cook healthier meals?  How much influence do these companies have on doctors and patients?

4.)  According to the second article, only about 10 percent of America’s medical schools are teaching their students how to cook with Tulane’s program.  Why do you think this number is so low?  Do you think more medical schools will adopt this type of program in the future? Explain your answers.
